Living and Loving

Yesterday provided interesting insight into Nicaragua. We began the day as usual by mixing cement and preparing rebar.  After lunch we regrouped at the Learning Resource Center for a short lesson on the history of Nicaragua and Villa Japon.  The people of the village are those who fought in the civil war that ended in 1990--both Contras and Sandanistas. The village is slowly recovering from the ravages of that war. Houses are now tin rather than plastic tents. The village finally established a water system only three years ago. They have a primitive electrical system. The "mayor" of the village told us his primary focus for the future is education and healthcare. He wants a full-time high school. We are working on the elementary school. We then walked to a local farm where we learned how to grind corn and make our own tortillas. The farm used a wood burning stove, so it was very much like what we would consider camping.  The tortillas were delicious. We ended the day with private dance lessons from two of the teachers at the school. Baile, baile, baile!!
